HLH - Strike!

Saturday a strike was called in union square, signs were made for the two opposing sides. Jim Manning was the reporter on the scene.

Tension was in the air.

By law we were restricted to keep a certain distance away from each other and keep moving.

Even if we didn't agree on the issue, everyone is entitled to their own view...you know freedom of speech and all.

We yelled at each other and the public. They had a right to know.

We eventually came to a compromise...we would never be able to agree.

The signs were abandoned but the public took up the cause! This was an important issue!

Things got ugly. Jim was almost caught in the crossfire.

Since Lester used to live in the area, just off 14th on University, we figured he must have always been thinking about the top albums of all time, so we'd see if anyone would be willing to share their opinion. Luckily we ran into Ed Schexnayder, another AiOP artist, just to get at least one result before we failed miserably at polling the public.

It rained miserably, and we bought an umbrella.

Who doesn't love to be approached on the street with clipboards, asking for 'a minute of their time'?

Finally we actually talk to a member of the public who says Bill Hicks had the greatest album of all time...Success!

A lot of times we get questioning looks when mentioning our collaborative name 'Harvey Loves Harvey.' In order to set the record straight (no pun intended) we held a tailgate party Sunday afternoon. We purchased a variety of manly snack foods, energy drinks and drinking appliances.

What's a manly man tailgate party without wings and a few laughs?

It looks like we're accosting the public, but they were just as excited about listening to the game as we were. No open containers involved, going to jail is kind of manly, but inconvenient.

It's important when tailgating to have the proper safety equipment to designate the 'Party Zone'

HLH - A Vote for McClellan is a Vote against the War!

HLH found the location where Tamminy hall once stood and reenacted a speech made by a McClellan supporter against Lincoln who seemed hell bent on civil war.

HLH made an impassioned plea to the passersby to vote for McClellan irregardless of the actual outcome of the election.
People were sympathetic to our cause, even if they didn't entirely understand why we were campaigning for a candidate who wasn't actually running anymore.
Spirits were high as the speech came to a close. Here's hoping the outcome won't mean civil war.

HLH - A Surprise Inspection

80 8th Ave lucked out Sunday afternoon and was the subject of a surprise inspection by HLH. Unsure of the buildings overall safety, hard hats were required, as well as walkie talkie communication at all times.
We separated and monitored the surrounding location, taking careful note of the building itself. Nothing was free from examination, even the phone booth on the corner.

We compared notes about the building construction, exits, and pedestrian traffic. We graded various elements strictly, according to city guidelines, but fairly.

Pigeons were a slight concern....they were irregularly gathering on the ledge above, as well as some funny looking vents. Further investigation is recommended.

An inspection certificate was obtained from our toolbox and eventually a passing grade was given. The certificate was posted for the building manager.

After our hard work, we had to take a mandatory lunch break according to union regulations. It was delicious.

HLH - The Intersection of Art and Commerce

Sunday October 18th, HLH set out to sell a framed piece of art. It wasn't going to be easy. It was raining and cold, not the best weather for prospective buyers.

An appropriate site was chosen for our new gallery. Lots of foot traffic and the right neighborhood, this should be a piece of cake.

We set the piece (a photo of Manet's garden's...classy) on an easel, just to make it extra fancy. HLH was a little worried we might not be appropriately dressed for the opening, but we crossed our fingers.
There was obvious interest in the work, but I think people hesitated thinking it was too rich for their blood. Or we were going to rob them.
We even adjusted the price to really make it a deal...we realized in this economy you have to make sacrifices...even in the art world. But we couldn't just give it away.
We retreated across the street, thinking perhaps we were scaring buyers away with our hard sell. We got a little more interest but realized once we yelled to get their attention, they left. We have to revise our sell.
Erin from AiOP even stopped by to offer some advice, but it was too late, the opening was pretty much a failure. This gallery thing is harder than we thought.

HLH - A Candlelight vigil for Henry Hudson

Henry Hudson has been under appreciated for many many years. HLH decided to hold a long overdue candlelight vigil to the great explorer on the corner of the Avenue named after him. Some candles were lit along with a flattering portrait of the man himself.

A short eulogy was prepared and read in Hudson's honor at dusk. It was an honorable speech commemorating his achievements and discovery of Manhattan island.

It was passionately delivered to the city, however unrehearsed. It was heartfelt tribute to an important part of history. It was windy and the candles blew out.
Another moment of silence was observed, it's the least we could do.

The candles and speech were left behind for future scholars.

HLH - Reliving New Years Eve 1998

In 1998, the band Unwound played at the Cooler which once stood at 14th and 9th Ave. In an attempt to relive that magic night, we listened to a bootleg live show from that era and talked about what we remembered from the show.
In a further attempt at authenticity, a cassette tape was obtained and dubbed. We created a bootleg case for the cassette and placed it into in a 1998 era cassette walkman.

Once we remembered how to use it, the band started tuning up in preparation for the show. We immediately remembered not a lot of people being there and that I had purchased the tickets as a christmas present for HLH.

As the show dragged on, we had to sit down and rest our legs...this was not authentic, as we stood the entire show in 1998, but we are older and our bodies can't take the abuse anymore. Also alcohol was not served at this reliving of the show.
We couldn't remember who opened for Unwound, but we remember we couldn't wait to finally see the headliner. They went on after midnight and really never mentioned the fact that it became 1999. We never thought they would cover Prince or make everyone kiss, but it was a weird detail of the night.

After the show was over, it was decided we would leave the cassette along with our collective memory of the event in the past forever. It would be someone else's problem now.

HLH - Monitor for Radiation

With the help of Boston Artist Tim Gregor, who developed a Hello Kitty Geiger counter, we started the monitoring process on the street at 10th Ave last Saturday afternoon. According to unclassified documents, uranium from the Manhattan project had been stored in the area so we set out to get a promising hit with the help of the cute scientific device.
First we needed to develop a plan...radiation could be anywhere, we discussed covering clockwise concentric circles from 10th and 14th, with attention to the recent highline park as early data was inconclusive.

We headed towards the Hudson, to develop a baseline reading and possibly work our way uptown towards suspect pier buildings on the water. If there was a place the project could have developed and contaminants stored it would definitely have been this area.

Jim Manning was recruited to document the process in order to have a chain of evidence in case an important discovery was in fact made.

More results, fairly low...reading less than one particle per million. Several spikes may have been due to normal variances in the device construction, or general anomalies.

Plant samples were taken to be analyzed offsite.

The high line was attempted to be monitored, but the park officials stationed there determined it wouldn't be necessary, and further permits would be needed to document the sample taking process. Eventually it was determined for public safety, however small the reading, the public should be warned of the possible contaminant in the area. Signs were posted and read by passersby.

KTT takes to the street

This weekend Kill!The!Tower!! aka KTT took to 14th street with their quasi-political, semi-belligerent message of protest and activism. The rain made for an overcast afternoon and sullen pedestrians rushing to and fro; but we were still able to get a few to sign our petition, take a flyer or two and even stop for some anti-development anti-bloomberg/no 3rd term chitchat.

**POWER BIKE PARADE
**SAT OCT 24 (our last ride!)

Power Bike Parade won't be riding tonite, Sat Oct 17th due to garbage weather. So our next and last ride is SAT OCT 24, at 6:30pm along 14th street in Manhattan, starting at the Con Edison power plant on the east side & continuing back and forth for about an hour. Come join us on the ride if you have a bike, or if not, just come and see us/the rest of the festival!

Power Bike Parade is a bike-powered electronic orchestra that demonstrates the use of an alternative power source by converting the kinetic energy of pedaling a bike into electricity used to create a festival of electro-acoustic music and glittering LED lights. The two-rider parade takes this everyday act of riding a bicycle, and expands it into a visual and sonic spectacle, re-appropriating the act as a performance and a venue for expression.

The bikes are outfitted with contact microphones, speakers, and custom bike instruments to amplify the sounds the bike makes during a ride, while LED lights are mounted on the bikes to light our way, amplifying and transforming the bike ride itself into a performance.

"Retailing 14th Street" continues....
"Project Retailing" is an innovative video project whereby retail workers' testimonials are projecting in front of retail stores. Saturday, October 17th will feature Scoop NYC workers telling their stories about working at the high-end Scoop NYC store where we will be gathered.

Former workers of Scoop NYC sued the company this summer for document abuse, citizenship status discrimination and unpaid overtime. Support Scoop NYC workers and come see “Project Retailing” Saturday, October 17th.

Subversive coupons and the Retail Workers Survival Guide will be distributed to all in attendance. You can also view "Dis-Posing," a sculptural installation of re-claimed mannequins striking a new pose.

Hello AIOP team, fellow artists, and followers…

It has been an exciting 2 weeks of performances and installations…

Inspired by a real situation, I’ve created another one…maybe even more realistic since it brings out very strong reactions. And I am not talking only about the police officers who brought my performers to the Union Square police station accusing them of scaring people in the army outfits. I am talking about people on the street, passerbys, who stop or not. They truly completed my work that is, after all, the mirror of the day to day life. I like the smiles, the anger, and the comments like “it is about endangered species”, “Oh! It’s about China”, “I don’t understand”, “It must be art”, and “What kind of demonstration is that?”…. I like all of them, as any comment assures me as an artist that I am on the right path and gives me the energy to accomplish this kind of public “action”.

I hope you can join me by finding us this and next Saturday, between 2-5pm along 14th and Union Square.

Everything looked good.

Location: Norwood, a club with a pro-arts mission, housed in a handsome historic residence on 14th st.

Context: aiop09, an event with a mission echoing my own interest in public work.

Organizers: aiop09, facilitating outreach, press, etc.

Fabricator: Let There Be Neon, excellent, friendly, a resumé of art neon big and small.

But New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission has spies sniffing out possible violations in town, and has called for the deinstallation of brick. The Andrew Norwood House, at 241 w14th St, is a landmarked structure. Apparently "neon signs," art or not, temporary or not, must be submitted for approval, and how arduous a process is that? Ah, the power of the "small-minded administrator," to quote an anonymous source.

In an ironic parallel to the death of the housing frenzy, this episode of brick idolatry has been extinguished.

Multiverse on 14th Rained Out Tonight - Th Oct 15

The Thursday Oct 15th 8PM-midnight installation of Multiverse on 14th at Union Square Park is canceled due to rain.

The weather forecast is rather grim this weekend so please check the blog for Friday and Saturday night as well.

Please JOIN in the Art in Oddd Places project by Jenny Marketou. “PARKOUR (SIGNWEAR) THE CITY “ a public performance this weekend.

Over the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 6 pm people are invited to “PARKOUR (SIGNWEAR) THE CITY” lead by a distinguished group of women. ParKour practitioners and the artist starting from Union Square through 14th Street to the High Line. All participants are dressed in artists designed “wearable situations” which are made out of red, yellow,purple or light blue recycle paper and are hand printed with signs that proclaim social inscriptions pointing at and addressing people as they walk by. Each participant will be provided with a wearable garment for the duration of each intervention.

Friday-Sunday, October 16, 17 and 18 (from 3 pm - 6 pm).

We will meet at Union Square East at the upper steps under statue of George Washington. There will be signs.

Unfixed/Unfixable pics

Some new images from this past weekend's round of drawings for Unfixed/Unfixable. A larger grouping was successfully installed at 5th and 14th (though I later spotted a typo-a danger of working fast and looking at the letters upside down).

And after nothing but indifference from the authorities, I finally ran into a gentleman from the Union Square Partnership who demanded to see my permit. I stated plainly that I needed none and tried to explain the nature of the project but he was clearly not interested. An elderly woman he had been talking to prior to confronting me stood near by and while he called the police I attempted, in the most diplomatic manner possible, to engage with her, but she was so hot that nothing she said made any sense. Something about new sidewalks and the New School. I gave up, wandered back to the USP Rent-A-Cop and waited for the police. After a few minutes I decided I would call it a day, finish documenting and go home. I started back toward my truck (parked 2 avenues away) with my rolling cart of supplies. I loaded the cart, noticed Mr USP had followed and was diligently recording my vehicle's tag number. I walked the same distance 3 more times, taking stills and video and giving the police ample time to arrive. They apparently had more important things happening.

Transitions SOUNDWALK :: Oct 17th, 18th CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

The Transitions Walk begins in Union Square and incorporates blocks of 14th and 13th street. The purpose of this type of walk is to gain an understanding of the psychogeographical boundaries between noisier commercial locations and quieter, more residential areas, and the noticeable transitions in the soundscape when passing through these zones. Walkers will also become aware of the demarcations of public space and private space through sound.

The Transitions Soundwalk begins at 1:30pm both Oct. 17th and 18th. Please meet in front of the statue of George Washington in Union Square Park at 1:30pm. This walk will last for one hour.

R-A-L-L-Y part 1

Due to the tremendous involvement of the Union Square community, LOUDspeaker! was successful in bringing people together through a peaceful yet colorful R-A-L-L-Y. At 1PM performers began their journey walking down 14th Street: interacting with people at bus stops, coffee shops, and along the side walks.

As they neared the park, they encouraged pedestrians to join in, from 2:30 - 3:00 PM they participated in spelling phrases of encouragement for onlookers .

The event was followed with free form spelling and discussions with viewers about the history of Union Square as a place for people to voice their opinions in both rallies and protests.

The consensus for Sunday's event is that giant sculptural letters increase hipsters' coolness, encourage jumping & laughter among small children, flash tourists cameras, and elicits smiles in the most seasoned of New Yorkers.

The Second Issue is available: Saturday, October 10th 8-11am The 14th Street NewsBoy (performance artist Lulu LoLo) will be hawking newspapers on 14th Street between Broadway & University Place—the South Side of Union Square.

The Second Issue is hot off the presses. This issue highlights the Grand Ball for the Prince of Wales at the Academy of Music with the startling news that the dance floor collapsed! Did you know that 14th Street was the center for theater, opera, and vaudeville? This issue tells of a teenage George M. Cohan and how critics panned Oscar Wilde’s play “Vera”. Don’t miss “Sightings” which tells you all about the comings and goings of famous residents of 14th Street. In this week’s ”Police Blotter” two police detectives have to drink six beers and two whiskies in order to make an arrest.

Friday, October 2nd saw the first appearance of the 14th Street NewsBoy hawking newspapers and the response was overwhelming. First of all my NewsBoy attire, thanks to the Fabulous Ramona Ponce stopped them dead in their tracks. Everyone loved my outfit! It is a new fashion statement! There were comments and compliments galore about how fabulous I looked. Strangers took my photo and sent them to me. Everyone who was wearing a newsboy cap took a newspaper. And one person told me he was only taking a newspaper because I looked so good in my costume. What did he mean costume? This is my working uniform.

Besides my attire "The 14th Street Tribune AIOP Edition Newspaper” knocked them dead. It looked so fabulous people couldn’t believe it was free. They loved the historic facts. One woman was taking a copy to her history professor at Columbia, children took them to school to show their teachers, people who do crossword puzzles (Cruciverbalists) wanted a newspaper for hints, memories of Klein’s Department store had a woman grab a copy out of my hand, even the competing 14th Street handbill people wanted a copy. Between Thursday’s press preview,opening and Friday’s first performance over 600 copies were given out free. And there are four issues total in the series —a true collector’s item.

And for the curious who missed the first issue—it contained the following stories: Boss Tweed's escape from jail, the shooting death of gangster Monk Eastman, former 14th Street resident Emma Lazarus whose poem graces the Statue of Liberty and other exciting histories of 14th Street including ticket forgery for a reading by Charles Dickens.

"We actually chatted up with an Indian family. The family was visiting from VA and had parents actually visiting from India. They stood out from NYC crowd as the ladies were actually dressed up in Indian Saris. It was interesting as well as exciting."

Sharing Tea with Asare at Tea House Productions

So on Friday at 4:00 I started to set up my Tea Cart at the corner of Irving Place and 14th with the help of Hani, the owner of the Cart. While setting up, Asare a local officer for the Union Square Partnership, came over and started telling us that we could not set up the cart on that corner and that we would have to move across the street. We asked him why, and the only thing he kept on saying was that vendors are not allowed to set up on the east side of the street in front of Con Edison because if one vendor does, then all these other vendors will and Con Edison does not want this. But I tried to tell him that I am working with Con Edison and that I have permission to temporarily set up at that corner only over the weekend for the Art Festival. Asare would not give up and just kept telling us to move. And I kept saying I had a permit to be there. He said that did not matter, I just could not start such a new precedent. Now mind you he has a very think African accent so it was a challenge to understand him, and he was practically barking the orders to us. But I asked him to call his boss, while I called my Con Ed representative to explain my side of the story. In the mean time another guard from the Partnership came over and also told me I had to leave, and when I discussed options we realized there was no other corner at Irving that I could go to due to various ordinances, and I did not want to move to another street because the maps had already been printed with my location. Finally Asare's boss came along with my representative from Con Ed who up until that point was suggesting that I just move so as to not cause any problems, and when we explained to the boss that I was an artist only doing a performance and not selling anything for only two weekends he just took a gander at the map and easily said sure fine, no problem. Whew....
Then go figure the next day while I am setting up Asare comes over and decides to share a cup of tea with me. He wanted to apologize for being so hard on me and was impressed with my strong points of view and unwillingness to back down on my plans. He congratulated me on being such a strong person. And on top of that he really like the Jasmine tea I served him, and told me how it reminded him of the tea he used to drink in Gahana to help his stomach when he was not feeling well. That it tasted much better than Lipton, which he drinks all the time. He worried if the tea was expensive and I said he could buy it for rather cheap down in China Town.
The rest of my time on 14th Street went well, despite being caught in the rain. A friend stopped by and we sipped tea inside the cart with the gas furnace burning to heat both us and the water. It is nice to know I now have a friend working in the neighborhood, and hope he drops by for a tea again when I am set up the weekend of the 17th.

Multiverse on 14th: The technological challenges of making a fountain Twitter. Part 1 of 2.

This is the story of our technological misadventures getting the fountain in Union Square Park to tweet out our Multiverse on 14th poems.

For some context: Multiverse on 14th consists of 3 "infinite" poems programmatically constructed by searching and pulling select "tweets" from the public Twitter feed in real-time.

Multiverse on 14th is also going to be a projected installation as a part of the Art in Odd Places 2009:SIGN art festival that will take place Th Fri Sa Oct 15 16 17 from 8PM-midnight at the fountain in the SW corner of Union Square Park. Map. You can read more about it here.

Now, onto the technical details.

Original Vision

Project the Multiverse website from a laptop via *unionsqwifi* into the fountain in Union Square Park.

In our original application to Art in Odd Places, we proposed projecting from a 10 foot tall tripod, onto the fountain in Union Square Park from ~20 feet away, almost hidden away in the trees behind some park benches.

We also proposed that we would project for 4 hours. (It turns out that committing to 4 hours instead of say 2 hours made the whole endeavor approximately 350% harder to pull off, but more on that later.)

The idea was to turn a relatively unimposing waterworks ("I didn't know there was a fountain in Union Square!") into a temporary well of musings, memories, rants and sometimes even poetry that passersby could "discover" on their own. Our goal was to not compete with the loud and insistent electrified signage all around Union Square. Instead, Multiverse on 14th's twittering fountain would be an unexpected oasis of introspection. (Yes, the irony!)

Hence, the need to stay 20 feet away from the fountain. The "set up" needed to be transparent, enabling the spectacle while avoiding turning into a spectacle in and of itself.

AiOP responded sagely that something 10 feet in the air would not escape the curiosity of certain public officials and might even pose a safety hazard. At the time, the festival was still 4 months away, so we thought: Well that's no problem, we'll figure something out.

We were both wrong and then right.

It's a matter of power...

Projectors eat a lot of power, 300 watts at any given moment to be specific. Especially if you're trying to project 30 feet in an uncontrolled space with a lot of ambient light onto turbulent, dirty water. (More on that to come as well.)

Such a projector would require a generator.

Generators a) cost a lot of money, even to rent; and b) make a lot of noise. This is Honda's "Super Quiet" 1000W generator. It's purring at 60dB, that's supposed to be as loud as "normal speaking voice." Not exactly the transparent "enabler" we were going for.

But then lo! and behold I found out about pico projectors. A new generation of hand-held projectors that are intended to be carried around in your pocket for whenever you feel an unplanned urge to watch a movie on the ceiling and will probably eventually be incorporated into mobile devices like the iPhone. Best of all, they work with the iPhone. Our power-sucking "10-feet in the air" set-up instantaneously downsized into 2 battery powered hand-held devices. We thought for a hot second, maybe we can rig up 4 of these babies, 1 in each corner of the fountain!

Beware of first-generation technology!

Goldilocks Picks a Projector

Pico Projector No. 1: Optoma PK-101 Pico Pocket Projector

I got Multiverse up and running in the Safari browser on a friend's iPhone and plugged in projector. Nothing. Turns out the iPhone won't send a signal from anything other than the iPod movie player. Not helpful for projecting websites. Okay, then we'll just have to use a laptop instead. Slightly bigger, but not a problem. Wrong. The PK-101 doesn't connect to laptops. (For the geeks, that means no support for a VGA signal.)

Pico Projector No. 2: 3M MPro110 Micro Professional Projector connects to laptops...Yay! But the projector's lamp (at just under 9 lumens) is too weak...Boo...Hiss.

(I'd like to take this opportunity to thank B&H for taking returns with no re-stocking fee!)

So back to the drawing board. Or rather back to finding a quiet power supply for a power-sucking projector.

On Amazon I found a giant battery pack. I'm still not clear on how to do the math but everyone agreed this bad boy would probably do the job. (Actually, I think I eventually figured out it would take 2 of these to get me the 4 hours of power I needed.) And dear Lord it weighed 60 pounds! And cost 400 dollars a pop.

Accidentally, I found out that 3M was about to release a 2nd generation hand-held projector, this time with a slightly more powerful lamp.

I will spare you the 2 weeks of online retail bungling that it took to finally get my hands on a 3M MPro120.

Now we finally had the essential ingredients.

Multiverse on 14th by Katie Parlante and Mimi Yin is a set of three "infinite" poems about 14th Street, composed of random musings, observations, remembrances, rants, and self-conscious disclosures found on Twitter. None of the speakers intended to create a poem together. Instead, we created a space and collaborated for them with a few simple rules.

You can experience Multiverse on the web at multiverse.caketoo.us.

Multiverse is also a projected installation that will take place over three consecutive nights Th, Fri, Sa October 15, 16 and 17 8PM - midnight at the little fountain on the Southwest corner of Union Square Park, transforming the fountain into a temporary well of private thoughts.

Each of the three poems paints a vignette of daily life on 14th Street.

The phrases are pulled from the public Twitter feed, from all over the English-speaking world. Yet, they feel appropriate on 14th street. Everyone belongs on 14th street. Every kind of activity belongs on 14th street. And every thought, hope, secret desire and confession belongs on 14th street.

New stanzas are generated every half hour with the latest Twitter data. In that sense, the poems are of "infinite length." This also means that viewers can contribute their own tweets and see them appear in the installation.

Although Multiverse is very much a Twitter project, we wanted to see if we could create something that could stand up on its own, independent of the online data source we’re pulling from; something that could be brought out of the computer screen into the physical world. We are grateful to Art in Odd Places for the opportunity to bring Multiverse to the real live 14th Street!

Silver Linings is up and running. This is an on going project over the month of October so keep your eyes peeled for the development. Most of the one's up at the moment are between 7th and 8th Avenue and between 5th and 6th Avenue. Definitely more to come. lpm14.org (La Part Maudite on 14th) is, on one level, an experiment in resolving a "site-specific" project from far away with zero means (from the esteemed and prestigious University of California, San Diego), probing the interstice between physical and virtual realms. Concurrently, LPM14 has no presence in NYC on 14th save for its mention on AiOP's map , and the presence that is brought by its viewers: you will be able to log onto the site from your portable device while the presence of the building in question (the Zeckendorf Towers, on the northeast corner of 4th and 14th), or, holding its image in your memory, from wherever you log onto the internet, once returned. As our intention for the project is to produce a simple architecture for real-time locative analysis of urban/ecological flows that are otherwise not explicit, it will be a kind of perpetual work in progress, with a beta version launching on October 1, 2009, and new features in development thereafter. Unfixed/Unfixable Dress Rehearsal

With assistance from the unflappable Liz Otten, I conducted a test run of my project at 7 sites along 14th street, all currently empty storefronts.

In the hope of eliciting more memories of these stores and their previous occupants directly from former patrons, some of the phrases were simple questions I've been using on fliers and posting along 14th. Additional fliers with contact info were left at each site.

Other phrases were short poetic sketches of fleeting moments on the street.

Perfect weather and nothing but positive responses (or curious stares). Even the Union Square maintenance guy choose not to sweep up my letters of ash.

Some folks from the City Meditation Crew were out doing a rehearsal as well.
